Introducing Ken Jarrold...

Ken Jarrold CBE is a writer and speaker with an interest in ethics and behaviour, leadership and management, the NHS, health, social care, the third sector, politics, current affairs and history.

Ken's current projects include:

The Power of Good

Ken is writing a book about the Power of Good and the behaviours that enable all of us to be part of the Power of Good. Ken discusses human nature and the role of religion in determining codes of ethics for most of history.

Ken’s question for people with religious faith, asked with respect, is whether their religion enables them to live closer to the Power of Good or further from it.

For further details see the page headed The Power of Good.

Thorp of Ryton

Ken now lives in Ryton in Gateshead and is fascinated by Charles Thorp [1783 to 1862] who was the Rector of Ryton from 1811 to 1862. Charles’ father Robert Thorp had been Rector from 1795.

Charles was Warden of the University of Durham and Master of University College from 1832 to 1862. He worked with the Church Missionary Society to set up a University in Freetown, Sierrea Leone and arranged for his family to buy the Farne islands employing a wildlife warden. Ken is not aware of a biography of Thorp and would like to write one when he has finished The Power of Good.

Stargate Explosion

On the 30th May 1826, 38 men and boys were killed in an explosion at the Stargate Mine near Ryton. Two of the men were buried in family graves at Holy Cross Church in Ryton and the others in unmarked graves. In 1993 the Ryton Heritage erected a memorial to all the victims.

The Rector, The Revd Alison Stewrat Smith has agreed that a Memorial Service should be held on the 30th May 2026 to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the explosion. Ken is working with the Rector and the Brighten Ryton Heritage Group to organise the service.

If you would like to know more about these projects, and to be involved in them, Ken would be pleased to hear from you.
